Your boiler is one of the most valuable items in your home, and something you use most days - especially when the weather is cool. We recently wrote a post on looking after your boiler, and now have another useful guide to share on further boiler maintenance tips to help keep your central heating in tip-top condition.
Check your boiler’s pressure
There is a pressure gauge on your boiler and the needle indicating what it is should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar. Sometimes your boiler can drop below this and need repressurising to get it performing as it should. You can do this via the filling loop, following the instructions in your boiler’s manual. Or if you don’t feel confident to do this or don’t have your manual, you can contact a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Turn your boiler on in summer
There’s no need to keep your boiler switched on when you don’t need it, particularly during warmer weather. Turning it off saves energy and reduces the cost of your bills. At regular points though, at least once a month, do turn your heating back on for half an hour to give your boiler a run. It’s similar to turning your car over if it’s been sat on the drive a long time, and will reduce the risk of it sitting idle for so long that it doesn’t work when you need it.
Get a carbon monoxide detector
This simple step could quite literally save your life, as it detect this silent and scent-free poison. A carbon monoxide detector will alert you to leaks from your boiler or other gas appliances and help keep you safe in your home.
Clean your boiler
Don’t clean inside your boiler as this can risk damage, and your heating engineer will do this as part of your annual service. However, it’s worth regularly dusting all around the outside as boilers accumulate dust like everything else in your home, and this can affect how well they work.
Let your boiler breathe
Boilers need ventilation, so ensure there isn’t clutter around it. It might be tempting to use the cupboard your boiler is in for storage but this can negatively affect how it works, so clear the area around your boiler and ensure it isn’t in contact with bags, coats or smaller bits of clutter.
