There’s lots to think about when buying a new boiler, and in terms of both cost and meeting your needs, a new boiler is not a straightforward purchase.
You’ll need to think about the amount of energy you use, the size of your home and family and research the best boiler to suit your needs. If you do your homework and make the right decision, you’ll benefit from your new purchase for many years to come, so it’s worth taking some time before you buy to really work out what you need.
At Boiler on the Blink, we understand how complicated buying a new boiler is for many homeowners. Following our recent popular post on boiler-purchasing tips, we’ve written some further guidance to help you, as a homeowner, make the right investment.
The number of bathrooms in your house
Many people don’t realise what an important factor this is when shopping for a new boiler. While you may be spoilt for choice with the different types of boilers available on the market, not all of them will fit your needs. For example, combi boilers can be great for energy-efficiency and heating up water as and when you need it, but they only suit homes with a single bathroom. This is because they can only send water to one source at a time, so don’t suit homes with two or more bathrooms or families with a large demand for hot water.
In these cases, a system or conventional boiler is likely to be the best option, as both allow a bath and shower to be run at the same time and have storage for additional hot water that you may need throughout the day.
Where you’d like your boiler positioned
You may not get the final say in this, but when you get a new boiler you could have the option to change its location to somewhere more convenient. For example, combi boilers can often be installed in airing cupboards as there’s no longer the need for an immersion heater. This can save you space downstairs, especially if your boiler is in the kitchen and you’d rather have an extra cupboard put in its place. There are a few influencing factors such as the length and width of your boiler and if your boiler needs to be placed near an outside wall, but your heating engineer can discuss these with you in more detail.
If you want to go Smart
Smart technology is now everywhere and, in our homes, it’s ever-growing. From voice-controlled speakers such as Amazon Alexa and Google Home to controlling your lights remotely, there are tonnes of options when it comes to Smart tech for your home. One of these is a Smart thermostat, which allows you to control your heating wherever you are through an app on your mobile phone or tablet. It means you need never worry about leaving the heating on when you go to work or coming home to a cold house if you forget to programme it. When you have a new boiler installed, incorporating a Smart thermostat into your installation is simple and easy, if you so wish.
Number of quotes
It’s advisable to get 3 separate quotes before choosing an engineer to install your boiler. Costs can vary considerably, and you also need to take into account the tradesperson’s qualifications and experience. While you don’t want to pay more than you need to, it’s not advisable to go too cheap as this likely means the installer lacks the necessary knowledge and qualifications to install your boiler properly and safely. This can be dangerous, and also result in you paying out more further down the line to fix potential problems.
Whoever installs your boiler must be Gas Safe registered and be able to show you their registration details. It’s also worth checking online for their previous customer reviews.
