Energy efficiency is a term we’re hearing more and more because there is a global energy crisis. If we continue to use energy as we have been, results will be disastrous so it’s crucial that we all make a change.
While it can be difficult to know where to start, as with many things, change begins at home.
As heating engineers, we understand the world of home energy, and because we also want to do our bit to help, have written this guide explaining steps you can take to reduce your energy use without going without.
How energy efficiency helps the world
We use energy whenever we run a hot bath, cook our dinner or turn a light on. And to help the planet, we need to make our homes more efficient, so we use less energy than we all currently do.
A study from The Energy Saving Trust explains that if everyone living in the UK switched to an A-rated condensing boiler and all used their heat and hot water in a more careful way, we’d save around 6.7 million tonnes of CO2. This is obviously a huge number, and shows what can be done if we all try.
How energy efficiency saves money
We all know we should save energy, but another thing most of us could do with saving is money. The cost of energy is rising, and every energy appliance in our home needs paying for by us. Making a few changes could result in significant savings over the year, so by making your home more energy-efficient you’ll be doing yourself a favour, as well as the planet.
How you can make your home more energy-efficient
While some changes will make more difference than others, doing what you can will still make a difference. You can try some or all of the following:
Having a SMART meter installed, to help you better understand and control your energy use.
Upgrading your appliances like your washing machine and dishwasher to more efficient models.
Having cavity wall or loft insulation installed.
Upgrading your old boiler to an A-rated model.
Having solar panels fitted.
Ensuring all of your windows have correct sealant.
Lowering your thermostat’s temperature.
